A girl becomes a woman once she enters menarche by age of 12 to 14. She is highly energetic under effect of hormone Estrogen balanced by Progesterone . This Estrogen E2 is secreted by her ovarian follicles while in process of making oocytes or eggs. Her shine on face , hair ,pumping of her heart ,tone of her muscles ,deposition of calcium in her bones, functioning of brain ,her memory ,everything in her body function under the effect of Estrogen. She moves on to child bearing age completes her family and gradually progresses to Menopause ie end of ovarian function with disappearance of Estrogen from body , a morbid state of physical and mental state called Menopause.
Consequence of lack of Estrogen
1)Loss of bone mass and diminishing calcium deposition in bones leading to osteoporosis of bones and pathological fracture commonly fracture neck femur. Women loss 50% of trabecular bone and 30% of cortical bone during her lif time n 50% after menopause. Approximately 40% of all postmenopausal women experience fracture. .and Osteoarthites. Weight ,calcium intake ,vit D ,exercise and ethnicity matters.1 gram calcium is daily recommended dose 19-50 yrs age group. Dairy products cheese , milk ,yoghurt., dark green vegetables broccoli, fish with edible bones, soya products. This is era of joint replacement.
2)Urinary Tract Problems-Laxity of muscle tone -sphincter coupled with dryness of urethra and vagina lead easy entry of bacteria and fungus into urinary tract causing infection -cystitis ,urethritis -increased frequency of urination, burning ,incontinence (inability to control urine),pain lower abdomen, etc.
Toning exercise, hormone replacement , laser and tightening surgeries-cystocoel repair, urethrocoel repair.
3)Function of brain -Dementia . Ideal management is keep brain working and engaged. if you r teacher keep teaching, keep playing , reading ,socializing ,listening music ,gardening. etc.
4)BMR-Basal metabolic rate reduces so weight increases, cardiac problems arise.
Hormone Replacement Therapy.-Very important role in alleviating menopausal symptoms . Deep venous thrombosis is absolute contraindication for this. Fear of genital tract malignancy and breast cancer keep its use limited .Estrogen should always be combined with progesterone, regular breast examination manually and mammography should be regularly done. It definitely reduces morbidity thus improving quality of life.
